Recently, I was able to participate in a virtual spiritual retreat (Wow!  Despite some of the issues I have with technology, it definitely makes some things easier and more available!). One of the clearest messages I received was pretty simple, but felt profound at the same time:

Let it go.
I was given an image of how many “things” I’m holding on to…of course, my precious books, but also thoughts about what I’m supposed to do and how I’m supposed to do it, who I think I have to show up as, how things in my life should be…basically all of my expectations and supposed to’s.

Some of the ‘things’ were mere strands, others I was clutching on to for dear life.

Let it go.

The funny thing was that as I let them go (at least in my visioning), I wasn’t falling.  I was being set free.  I could let go of the clutching, the struggling, the striving.  And it felt great!

Coming back to “the real world,” I recognize I can slip back into old ways pretty quickly, but now there’s a little ping that wakes me up to what feels like a sense memory of letting go again.  Such a gift!

Are there things in your life that you are tightly holding on to?  I invite you to stop for a few moments and, as you take some deep breaths, notice if you can release your grip just a little bit.  See what happens.

Nuggets:

Guy Finley from his book, Letting Go, A Little Bit at a Time:

“The divine intelligence that seeded within you the wish to realize a free, holy, fearless life will see to its flowering, providing you nourish this same wish with all your heart, mind, and soul.”

“Letting go of what holds you down is how you cooperate with going up.  You see your true nature is high.  And this is your new destination.  But you don’t choose it.  No. You allow yourself to rise.”
