When’s the last time you experienced SERIOUS delight? Or even mild delight? Has life during this pandemic gotten pretty grim?

In this episode, Kamala talks about delight as being “of the Light.” And how you can feel closer to the Divine just by allowing yourself the moments to experience simple pleasures that ignite delight within you.

“The moment you have in your heart this extraordinary thing called love and feel the depth, the delight, the ecstasy of it, you will discover that for you the world is transformed.”

Thomas Merton wrote “I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end…”

In these uncertain times, we may feel fearful or frustrated or even lost. We may feel despair or bitterness. Rather than stay in those dark places, may we bow our hearts in faith, knowing we’re not alone. Remembering that “this, too, shall pass.”

“Don’t it always seem to go, you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone.”

We women, especially women in their late 50’s to mid-60’s, are entering a time when our looks are changing, seemingly overnight – and we may not be quite prepared. These changes can feel like a loss and we may need to grieve that loss. But all is not completely lost – and we can love and appreciate the looks, the body, we have now.

How do we manage to rise up and find meaning In this crazy, difficult, and tumultuous world? The Paradoxical Commandments
- Kent M. Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.

Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

The last several months have shown us that we humans really don’t have the control over life that we’d thought we had. We may be the master of our fate, until a tiny virus comes along and changes everything. Suddenly, we’re no longer in charge; our anger, frustration, and fear are likely to flare up, creating other waves revealing our lack of control. A key to finding serenity? Taking this world as it is, not as we think it SHOULD be.

“God, Grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.
Taking this world as it is,
Not as I would have it.
Trusting that all things will be made right
As I surrender to God’s will.”

This prayer was adapted from one probably written by Reinhold Niebuhr.

Fathers are a little girl’s first love. For better or worse, they mold how their daughters see themselves, their confidence and abilities.

In this episode, Kamala shares about her experiences with her father – from adoration to bitterness, a dysfunctional push-pull: desire for Daddy’s approval, while resenting his constant disapproval. And a hurtful decision to prove him right – to everyone’s detriment.

“Some fathers raise their daughters to be seen and not heard; they raise their daughters not to speak out. Raise strong women!” – Meghan McCain

“I always felt like there wasn’t a blueprint for father-daughter relationships – for them or for us. Because what are they supposed to do with us, treat us like boys, or small women, or what? Father-daughter relationships are so unique from family to family…” – Lucy Alibar

If you were raised to be a good girl, you probably heard “everybody makes mistakes” but your experience was that you were supposed to be practically perfect! You didn’t have leeway to make messes or just experiment and see what happens. Even as an adult, you may so dread making public mistakes that you hold back from trying new things.

But, you can’t move mountains if you aren’t willing to flub up once in a while. So, if you need it, here’s your permission slip to experiment with “being bad.”

“Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.”

Recently, we’ve witnessed a murder of a black man at the hands of a person who was sworn to protect and serve. We are shocked and outraged. Bottled up anger, fear, frustration and pain have been uncorked, and we are suffering.

Do you struggle with self-love and self-appreciation? Many women do! Often this stems from childhood wounds – not feeling you’d been really seen, heard, or valued.

What woman doesn’t want to be thought of as being beautiful in some way? For Baby Boomer women, steeped in a culture of women’s value being equated with her beauty, and movies of beautiful Disney princesses (and evil stepmothers), aging and fading looks can hit us hard. We may “know better” but part of our identity may be tied up with having been considered young and pretty. Superficial though it may seem, it’s a pain many women grapple with – and hesitate to talk about BECAUSE it seems so shallow – vain even!

What if Snow White’s “evil” stepmother was just a perimenopausal woman grieving her fading beauty?

Society puts a heavy emphasis on beauty for women. So, naturally, how we look becomes a part of our identity. As we age, and we’re no longer “young and pretty,” it can be a blow to our ego, a loss of how we’ve seen ourselves.

It’s a first world problem, for sure, but can be tough for many women. Even talking about it is difficult – it seems like vanity!! Like the ad, “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful!” Ewww

We can grieve the loss – and learn to recognize the real beauty is still inside.

Mother’s Day may trigger some deep emotions about your relationship with your mother. Many of us experienced some wounding with our mothers – from over-involvement to too little. History reveals that this wounding has gone on for generations – women compelled to dim their lights to be accepted in society.

These times are particularly challenging as there’s so much uncertainty: What’s really going on? How long will it last? How will I/my family/my work be affected? Uncertainty breeds a sense of powerlessness and loss of control which stirs up fear and a whole range of other emotions.

The roller coaster of emotions is natural, but we don’t have to stay in the anxiety. Let’s talk hope instead. Make hope relevant.

There’s a saying that when emotions are high, resourcefulness is low. These times will require as much resourcefulness as possible, because we really don’t know what’s in store. Adaptability, flexibility, creativity, ingenuity, hope and faith will help see us through. And breathing. Lots and lots of breathing.

Quotables:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

I often read this when I want to remember to dwell on the good stuff:
Phillipians 4:8:
Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

It’s a paradox. Courage requires vulnerability (and vice versa). And in our culture, we still equate vulnerability with weakness, with being easy prey. No, thank you!

Most of us have tender hearts, at the core. But early wounding causes us to build walls and shells to protect ourselves from further hurt. It’s a brilliant strategy that works really well – until it doesn’t. Until having an impenetrable wall hurts the heart that wants and needs connection.

In this episode, Kamala shares about developing wholeheartedness – a soft heart with a strong back, or as she puts it…heart and chutzpah!

Our lives are filled with periods of trials and hardships. Some are relatively easy to bounce back out of. But some are meant to bring us to a deeper level – of our understanding, our compassion, or of our soul.

The process may turn our lives upside down, leaving us feeling lost and stranded, angry or confused – or all of the above. Recognizing the process as a deconstruction and rebuilding of a next, higher version of yourself can ease the discomfort – not remove it, but at least ease it.

For those who are about moving the mountains of their lives, these dark nights are to be expected periodically as the means of forming and then birthing the heroine (hero) designed for moving this particular mountain

Quotables:
“If the dark night is indeed a rite of passage, your job is to let the transformation take place. Be sculpted, renewed, changed. You are the caterpillar becoming a butterfly. Your task is to let the change happen. Do what you can to participate in and cautiously and artfully further the process. Discover the very point of personhood: the process of constant renewal….To be a person means that you are always becoming, and a dark night of the soul is one sign that you are alive.” – Thomas Moore

The recent deaths of Kobe Bryant, his daughter, her friends and their families serve as a reminder of the preciousness of life – that tomorrow is guaranteed to no one.
This reminder is also a call to live life as fully as possible. Life is meant to be lived FLAMBÉ – feeling like a million bucks everyday – allowing the passion and
life force within to guide the way.

At the time of publishing, the video mentioned in the podcast was no longer available. The following link may still be working: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4E_4c3j9Y8

Quotables:
“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” ~ Marcus Aurelius

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” ~ Mary Oliver

“Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have – life itself.” ~ Walter Anderson

“Every moment of life is precious and can never happen again and therefore is a reason to appreciate, be grateful for and celebrate the fact that you are alive.” ~ Zelig Pliskin

For many women, being raised to be ‘good girls’ created a prison they dared not try to escape. Breaking out, being wild and free, was dangerous. But, it turns out that stifling the wilder heart within can suffocate the soul – a perhaps more subtle, death of its own.

Kamala invites the listener to notice where good girl (or boy) shackles might still be in place – and to allow a little of the wilder nature within be expressed. Life is meant to be lived FLAMBÉ – feeling like a million bucks everyday.

“Within every woman there is a wild and natural creature, a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity and ageless knowing. Her name is Wild Woman, but she is an endangered species. Though the gifts of wildish nature come to us at birth, society’s attempt to ‘civilize’ us into rigid roles has plundered this treasure, and muffled deep, live-giving messages of our own souls. Without Wild Woman, we become overdomesticated, fearful, uncreative, trapped.” – Clarissa Pinkola Estes

One hundred years ago, the world entered an era known as the Roaring 20’s. The Roaring 20’s were marked by a sense of change, breaks with tradition, a letting loose – a new energy to life. Doesn’t it seem like we’re experiencing some of that today – even if we’re being riled up, it’s an energy that’s rising.

In this episode, Kamala brings through an activation for the accomplishment of our goals and dreams for this year, connecting with Divine Possibillity. She also invites taking a closer look at the “sludge” that might be impeding the flow of possibility – those thoughts, beliefs, and feelings that we may have just stepped over, but that wind up hindering our progress. Past disappointments, heartaches, and resentments that close our hearts ever so slightly, but add up to major blockage in the long run.

Disappointments can burrow in, fester and sap your energetic flow of love and success. Take the quiz to find out if you’re being sabotaged by past heartache or disappointments: http://bit.ly/heartachequiz

Kamala shares a reading from John Pavlovitz about the holidays – when life – and the world – isn’t feeling so merry and bright. The holidays can bring such expectations of cheer and good tidings, but when that’s not your experience, it can feel lonely and disheartening.

John Pavlovitz has written a piece that’s timely (even though it was written a few years ago) and touching and hopeful.

Shame is like a cockroach, scurrying for cover when the light comes on. It can’t stand scrutiny. But has a cunning way of keeping us trapped in its web, scaring us into thinking exposure will bring our ruin. So, many of us have inadvertently given shame the power in the relationship and let it run the show, causing frustration, pain, and even more shame.
In this episode, Kamala discusses the web of shame, perfectionism, and not-enoughness and shares a recent experience of shining the light on shame – with unexpected results.

Living with a little pizzazz!
Flambé is an acronym for Feeling Like A Million Bucks – Everyday!  It’s also a reminder to let myself be excited, surprised, and fiery about life – as I encourage other women to do the same.  It’s also a tribute to my mother, who didn’t get to live FLAMBÉ often enough.
